Harriett R. Elwell (b. 5 Sep 1814, d. 10 Sep 1904) was the mother of four children, all too young to serve during the civil war.

Author: likely Eleazer C. Elwell (husband)

Hariett R. Elwell was married to Eleazer C. Elwell (b. 3 Jul 1815, d. 31 Oct 1899) who served in both Co. D of the 12th Maine Infantry (15 Nov 1861-15 Apr 1862) and Co. E of the 11th Maine Infantry (26 Sep 1864-29 Jun 1865). The letter likely dates to March of 1865 since the 11th Maine was in the Richmond area during that time. Most of Eleazer's service in the 12th Maine was in Mississippi.
