Susan H. "Suzie" Johnson was a school teacher who never married.  Susan was principal of the Oswego College for Young Ladies in Oswego, Kansas, 1887-1893.  She was the daughter of Rev. Baker Johnson who was a Presbyterian minister in Oxford much of his life, who served and planted a number of churches in the Oxford area.  He was known to walk twenty miles to serve one of those churches so that the horses could rest for their farm work.

Author: Very likely Thomas S. Johnson (brother)

Thomas S. Johnson, younger brother of Suzie, was a delegate with the Christian Commission at Fort Monroe from June 1, 1864, until November 4, 1864, at which time he received a commission as a chaplain with the 127th United States Colored Regiment.  He was ordained in the Presbyterian Church December 7, 1864 and mustered into the 127th on December 14, 1864.  This letter is dated during that transition period when he could easily have been in Baltimore updating his family on the news and transition.
