Carrier Pigeon - Way

USCC Carrier Pigeon Corner Card to Mr. George Way, Kendall Mills, NY.  Endorsed by Wm H. Tiffa(ny), Chaplain.

William H. Tiffany was from Saratoga County, NY.  He was a USCC Delegate during November 1864 on board the ship Blackstone for a prisoner exchange.  The Blackstone left Fortress Monroe on November 8. It went to Hilton Head and left November 20 for Venus Point.  On November 21, they loaded 565 men and sailed back to Annapolis, MD.

This letter was mailed through Old Point Comfort on November 24 (1864).

Usage Date: November 24
Usage Location: Old Point Comfort

Recipient: Mr. George Way

George Way is listed in the 1860 census as a Master Carpenter in Kendall Mills, NY.

Author: Possibly John Way

In the 1860 census, George Way is listed as having a 21 year old apprentice named John Way, likely a relative 18 years younger than George.  There were a number of soldiers named John Way listed from New York Regiments in that age range.

The 1855 New York Census shows George Way living with an unusual group of people that included Timothy Gorman, who became a member of Company D and Battery K of the 3rd New York Light Artillery.  Timothy Gorman died in Andersonville prison on June 17, 1864.  This was possibly a letter notifying George Way of Timothy Gorman's death.
