Cincinnati - Boyd

Cincinnati branch corner card to Mr. R. H. Boyd in Marion, Ohio.  This is likely a December of 1864 usage because of the black double circle postmark.  The double circle postmark was discontinued before December of 1865.

Usage Date: December 17, [1864?]
Usage Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

Recipient: Mrs. R. H. Boyd

Mrs. R. H. Boyd (Rebecca Hall Boyd) of Pleasant Township, Marion, Ohio, was married to Robert Glass Boyd and had six children, one of whom served in the 121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was killed a Kennesaw Mountain, Ga.  Kantor records two receipts of goods to the US Christian Commission (August 24, 1863  and October 11, 1865) sent to Mrs. R. H. Boyd and since this is addressed to her as "Sec." in an official capacity, this may well have been an acknowledgement of donations as well.  I have not determined what S. A. S. stands for in the address, but there were many women's auxiliary organizations which solicited donations on behalf of the Christian Commission, so Rebecca was likely involved in one of those organizations during the war.  Her husband, Robert G. Boyd, is noted as an Elder and leader in the Presbyterian Church in Ohio.

Author: Unknown - likely from branch official on receipt of donations

As Kantor's collection includes two Cincinnati branch acknowledgements of receipt of goods from Mrs. R. H. Boyd, this letter may well have contained such an acknowledgement and is addressed in an official way.  John H. Boyd, her son and a Private of Company B, 121st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, was killed at the battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 27, 1864 (age 22).  This letter may possibly have been in relation to that even as well, but is not contemporaneous to that event.
