In 1860, Charles C. Thompson was living with the Moss family in Elmira, NY. He enlisted in the 23rd NY Infantry on September 23, 1861 and was discharged with the rest of the regiment May 22, 1863. There were no other close relatives old enough to serve in the war and Marion R. Moss (age 17 in 1860) never married.
