USCC - Ruffin

USCC corner card to Lottie M. Ruffin, Old Church, Hanover, Virginia.  This appears to be a post-war usage although the year in the cancellation is unclear. Old Church was just north of Richmond and would have had US postal service until after the war.  It looks like it could be a 4 or a 6, but since it appears to be a post-war usage it is likely a late usage of a USCC cover in 1866.

Usage Date: April 25, [1866?]
Usage Location: Louisville, KY

Recipient: Mrs. Lottie M. Ruffin

Lottie M. Ruffin was married to Julian Calx Ruffin of the 12th Virginia Light Artillery, who was killed May 16, 1864, in the battle of Drewry's Bluff.  She had five children, the last being born in 1863.  Her father-in-law, Edmund Ruffin, was a famous fire-brand speaker and ardent secessionist who even traveled to Charleston, SC, and fired one of the first shots at Fort Sumter in April, 1861.  Her father-in-law was despondent following Lee's surrender and committed suicide in the summer of 1865.
