Lucinda "Lucy" (A. VanBuskirk ) Woodworth was married to George M. Woodworth and would have been 21 years old and had a 3 yr old daughter in 1863 when her husband enlisted in the 19th New York Cavalry (later designated the 1st New York Dragoons).  In June of 1863, George's unit was under Phil Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley and was heavily engaged at Trevilian Station, VA.  George was killed in action on September 26, 1864, at Port Republic, VA.  Later Lucy Woodworth was remarried to Elisha Baker

While the author is unknown, this letter is postmarked a few days after Lucy'c husband, George M. Woodworth, was heavily engaged under Sheridan at Trevilian Station, VA.  This may have been a message carried or relayed on his behalf by a fellow soldier following the battle.
